A secretive little fish of coral heads in lagoons and seaward reefs, the ocellate soapfish keeps between about 3 and 15 metres. Living alone or in pairs and rarely spotted, it secretes a bitter skin slime that deters anything tempted to bite, and grows to only around 13 centimetres.
