This lyretail grouper haunts clear water around offshore islands and reefs, usually below 15 metres, hunting fishes, crabs, shrimps and mantis shrimps. It reaches more than 80 centimetres and is prized eating, though in some places it is banned from sale because of ciguatera. Its forked tail and yellow margins make it easy to recognise underwater.
