The jarbua terapon is marked with bold curved stripes and can grind its swimbladder to produce audible grunts, which is why its relatives are called grunters. It lives over shallow sand near river mouths and pushes freely into estuaries and fresh water. Juveniles crowd sandy intertidal flats and tide pools, and the species reaches about thirty six centimetres.
