The barred flagtail packs into tight schools along rocky shorelines, hanging just below the breaking surf where few other fish hold position. It hunts free swimming crustaceans and small fish, mostly as light fades, and young ones shelter in tide pools. It keeps to the surge zone and reaches about forty centimetres.
