The Cape horse mackerel forms great shoals over the continental shelf off southern Africa, rising into surface waters to feed at night and sinking back near the bottom by day. Juveniles live on copepods while adults take fish and a wide spread of invertebrates, ranging from the surface down to about 500 metres.
