Thick fleshy lips give this snapper its name, and adults patrol deep coastal slopes while juveniles shelter on shallow algae reef flats near freshwater run offs. It feeds on fishes, cephalopods and bottom living crustaceans and grows to nearly 90 centimetres. Prized as food, though large reef caught fish have caused ciguatera poisoning.
