A large sweetlips reaching about a metre, it favours turbid water over muddy and sandy bottoms near rock outcrops, wrecks and reef edges. It feeds on bottom living invertebrates, and its young hide in weedy ground far from the adults. It has been linked to cases of ciguatera poisoning, so it is not always safe to eat.
