The javelin grunter haunts turbid inshore waters over sand and mud down to about seventy five metres, often around wrecks, and pushes into low salinity estuaries. It feeds on crustaceans and fish, and grinds its throat teeth to produce a grunting sound. Spawning shoals gather near river mouths in winter.
