A silvery grunt with a dark saddle, it lives in coastal waters over sand near reefs down to about 110 metres. It feeds on crustaceans and small fishes, and like other grunts it can grind its throat teeth to make sound. Edible but quick to spoil, it reaches about 59 centimetres.
