Fiercely territorial, this butterflyfish stays close to tabular and staghorn Acropora corals and feeds on their polyps and mucus. It lives in shallow lagoons and seaward reefs to about 30 metres, alone or in pairs, while juveniles hide secretively among the coral branches.
