A deep dwelling butterflyfish of steep outer reef drop offs, it works rubble slopes and growths of black coral and sea fans between about 22 and 80 metres. Long thought to live alone, it has lately been seen in small groups of up to five, and pairs off to breed. It reaches about 14 centimetres.
