The singular bannerfish carries a tall white pennant trailing from its dorsal fin and is the largest of the bannerfishes, reaching about thirty centimetres. Adults favour deep lagoon and seaward reefs with strong coral growth and high relief, where they feed on coral polyps. It is an uncommon sight, and juveniles stay secretive on inshore reefs.
