The stocky hawkfish perches on its thickened lower fin rays among the rock and coral of surge swept reef fronts, propped up and watching for prey. It darts out to grab crabs, other crustaceans, small fish, urchins and brittle stars. Built for the wash zone, it keeps to the top few metres of the reef.
