The checkerboard wrasse patrols sand patches of lagoons, seaward reefs and drop offs down to about 40 metres, cracking open molluscs, crustaceans and sea urchins with its strong jaws. Young fish gather at the foot of surge channels. It reaches some 27 centimetres.
