On Indo Pacific reef flats and lagoons it scrapes encrusting algae and seagrass with a strong fused beak, reaching about 54 centimetres. It feeds singly or in small groups down to roughly 27 metres, and like other parrotfishes it begins life as a female and can later turn male.
