The ember parrotfish scrapes algae from rock and coral with a fused beak of teeth, grinding off bits of reef as it grazes. It ranges from shallow reef tops down to about 35 metres, sometimes in large schools at the base of island cliffs, and like its kin starts female before some turn male.
