This slender sandperch rests on open sand and rubble near reefs, then lifts off the bottom to snatch zooplankton drifting overhead. Its forked, lyre shaped tail drives those feeding rises, sometimes alongside basslets. It ranges down deep seaward slopes to about 170 metres.
