It shares a burrow with an alpheid shrimp on silty lagoon and coastal reef floors, the near blind shrimp digging while the goby keeps watch at the entrance. When danger nears it flicks its tail to signal the shrimp and both dart back underground. It stays in shallow water down to about 15 metres, often near places where freshwater runs off the land.
