Adults graze films of algae from bare rock along deep coastal reef slopes and outer walls, usually below thirty metres and rarely shallower than fifteen. The young keep to shallow protected reefs among soft coral, often only knee deep, and like other surgeonfish it carries a sharp scalpel on each side of the tail base.
