A muscular tuna relative that stays close to shore, the kawakawa forms huge mixed schools that can run into thousands of fish sorted by size. An opportunistic hunter, it takes small fishes, squid, crustaceans and plankton, and grows to about a metre. It can carry ciguatera toxin.
