One of the ocean's great tuna, it reaches well over two metres and ranges across the open sea from the surface down to depths approaching 2,700 metres. An opportunist, it takes fish, squid, crustaceans, salps and almost anything it can catch, and spawns where surface waters sit between 20 and 30 degrees. Heavy fishing for the sashimi trade has driven it to Endangered.
