Big white spots scattered over a black body make the young of this triggerfish unmistakable on the reef. A solitary fish of clear seaward slopes, it patrols deep drop offs in the open and ducks into caves when a diver gets too close. It reaches about 50 centimetres and is uncommon to rare across much of its range.
