Patterned in bold wedges, this triggerfish lives in surge swept shallow reefs over bare rock and rubble. It is territorial and eats almost anything it finds, from algae and worms to mollusks, crustaceans and sponges. Threatened, it can wedge itself into a crevice by locking its dorsal spine. It reaches about 30 centimetres.
