The only fully marine mammal that lives on plants, the dugong grazes seagrass meadows in warm shallow bays and channels, usually over fine sand. It travels in small groups of up to six and dives no deeper than about 20 metres, though it ranges along coasts well past 100. The IUCN lists it as vulnerable.
