Armoured in heavy plate like scales, the pineconefish carries a pair of light organs on its lower jaw that glow with the help of luminous bacteria. It shelters under ledges and in caves of rocky reefs, mostly between twenty and two hundred metres, and stays small at around seventeen centimetres.
