A small deepwater shark named for the bright luminous gland under its belly that releases a glowing cloud, the taillight shark is known from only a handful of specimens. One holotype came from a bottom trawl below four hundred metres while another was netted near the surface in the open ocean, and its strong jaws and sharp teeth suggest it takes fairly large prey for its size.
