A slender bristlemouth of the open ocean, it rides the daily vertical shuffle of the deep, sitting near 500 to 800 metres at night and dropping past 1,250 metres by day. Rows of light organs run along its body, taking shape once the fish passes a few millimetres long. It starts life male and later turns female, scattering its eggs into the water.
