An Antarctic bottom dweller, this rockcod thrives in water near the freezing point of seawater, around minus two degrees, where its blood resists icing up. It picks polychaete worms, snails and small crustaceans off the seafloor in McMurdo Sound, spawns once a year and grows to about 28 centimetres.
