Bands of orange, blue and red run along the body of this surfperch, which haunts rocky shores and the edges of kelp beds off California. Rather than laying eggs the female carries her young inside her until they are born live and fully formed. It grows to about 30 centimetres and gathers in numbers in the autumn.
