A small swimming crab of warm Atlantic shallows, the red swimcrab rarely grows wider than a thumbnail and keeps to the intertidal down to about 38 metres. It favours bottoms draped in algae and ascidians, on sand, gravel and rock alike, and is most common in water less than 20 metres deep.
