Born in gravel beds of coastal streams, the sockeye salmon runs to the open ocean to grow before returning to spawn and die in the same fresh water where it hatched. A landlocked form called the kokanee never leaves its lake and stays much smaller, and spawning adults flush deep red with green heads.
