One of the smallest of all dolphins, the franciscana grows to roughly a metre and a half and carries an unusually long, slender beak. It hunts fish, squid and crustaceans near the bottom of shallow coastal water off South America, sometimes pushing up into estuaries and the la Plata river. The species is listed as Vulnerable, largely because so many drown in coastal fishing nets.
