Each summer it hauls out by the hundred thousand onto a handful of North Pacific islands to breed, then spends the rest of the year alone at sea. It hunts after dark, diving for schooling fish and squid, and a dense pelt of more than a quarter million hairs per square inch keeps it warm in cold water. Centuries of hunting for that fur left the species listed as Vulnerable.
