A massive river sturgeon reported past three metres, it runs up large Chinese rivers to spawn after years feeding in deep coastal water. Bottom oriented and long lived, it belongs to one of the oldest surviving fish lineages, armoured with bony plates rather than scales. Dams and overfishing have pushed it to the edge of extinction.
