A deepwater fish that hunts copepods and small shrimp like euphausiids, the scaly paperbone rises toward the surface at night as a juvenile and settles deeper as it grows. It is a synchronous hermaphrodite, carrying both sexes at once, and reaches about thirty two centimetres.
