Blotchwing Flyingfish

Cheilopogon hubbsi

Blotchwing Flyingfish

This flyingfish builds up speed underwater then bursts into the air, spreading enlarged fins to glide for long stretches above the surface. It lives in coastal seas near the top of the water and lays sticky eggs that anchor to kelp and floating debris by fine threads. Patterned wings give it its blotchwing name.
