Big silvery schools of this small sprat appear off Tasmanian shores in spring, often pushing up into estuaries and well up the rivers. It stays in coastal water no deeper than about 50 metres and rarely exceeds fourteen centimetres. As with other sprats it feeds by straining plankton from the water.
