This anchovy packs into dense, tightly wheeling schools in coastal water, mostly within thirty kilometres of shore but sometimes far out to sea. It filters euphausiids and copepods and pecks at larger prey, spawning in batches through the year, and much of the catch is turned into fishmeal and bait.
