Tall, flat and silver with trailing fin filaments, the hairfin lookdown gathers in small schools near the bottom of shallow coastal waters down to about 50 metres. It feeds on small squid, shrimp, polychaete worms and small fishes, and grows to nearly 40 centimetres.
