A small, ribbon shaped fish of inshore mud bottoms, the saddleback gunnel slips among eelgrass and seaweed feeding on tiny mollusks and crustaceans. It grows to about thirty centimetres, and both parents coil around the egg mass to guard it until the young hatch.
