Whitley's sergeant lives in shallow water along the outer edges of reef complexes, where feeding aggregations of a hundred or more rise high above the bottom to pick plankton from the current. Pairs form to breed and the male guards eggs cemented to the reef. It reaches about 14 centimetres.
