Young redband parrotfish hide in seagrass next to the reef before moving onto the coral as adults, where they rasp algae off the rock and often rest flat on the bottom. Every fish starts life female and the largest may later turn male. They reach about 28 centimetres, and eating them has caused cases of ciguatera poisoning.
