Known from a single specimen collected during a nineteenth century French voyage hunting for the South Pole, this grouper remains one of the great puzzles of its family. Even the place it was caught was never recorded, leaving the IUCN with too little to assess. What survives is a holotype of a benthopelagic fish reaching about twenty five centimetres.
