Juveniles grow up among mangroves before moving out to lagoon and coastal reefs as they mature, where schools graze algae from seagrass, mangrove roots and rock. The vermiculated spinefoot carries venomous fin spines, reaches about forty five centimetres, and gathers inshore in large groups to spawn in summer.
