A surgeonfish relative of shallow coral reefs, the barhead spinefoot grazes benthic seaweeds across reef flats, sandy patches and estuaries, and tolerates murky water that drives off fussier fish. Adults pair off and reach about 30 centimetres, while small juveniles shelter in mangroves and even push into freshwater. The fin spines carry venom, so handle with care.
