This slender whiting works silty and muddy bottoms in the deeper parts of bays, often slipping into river mouths, estuaries and mangrove creeks. Juveniles crowd the shallows in summer and move offshore as they grow, switching from a diet of small crustaceans to polychaete worms and bivalves. It reaches around 30 centimetres and goes down to roughly 50 metres.
