A sturdy seabream of the eastern Atlantic, the Canary dentex hunts close to the bottom over rock and other substrates down to about 150 metres. Large adults often go alone while smaller fish keep to small groups, taking fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. It grows to about a metre and is an important food fish.
