Sailfin Weever

Trachinus collignoni

Sailfin Weever

A small weever of shallow coastal sand and mud, this fish lies buried with only its eyes showing. Like others in its family it carries venomous spines on the gill cover and first dorsal fin, so a buried one is easy to step on without seeing it.
