A giant flatfish of the cold North Pacific, the Pacific halibut can grow past two and a half metres and live for decades. Young fish stay near shore, moving into deeper water as they age, then shuttling between the deep shelf edge in winter and shallow coast in summer. Both eyes lie on its dark upper side as it ambushes fish from the bottom.
