A freshwater sculpin of gravel riffles in rivers and rocky lake shores, the coastrange sculpin occasionally slips into estuaries and nearshore coastal water. It feeds mostly at night on aquatic insects and bottom invertebrates and makes seasonal migrations. It grows to about 17 centimetres.
